My soul is boasting in the Lord

Psalm 34
I will bless the Lord at all times;
    His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
    let the humble hear and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
    and let us exalt his name together!

The Psalmist says that his soul makes its boast in the Lord! When a person boasts about something he refers to what he values and what on reflection gives him pleasure. The Psalmist says my boast is in the Lord or said more commonly, my boast is “of the Lord – boasting of Who He is, His character and attributes, what He has done and His faithfulness to His promises.

There is no way to look at David’s boast in the Lord without recognizing what he is not boasting about:

  • not money
  • not position in society
  • not intellect
  • not status or office held
  • not works of my hand
  • not family name
  • not material possessions
  • not any man

The Word of God

Jeremiah 9:23-24 (NLT)
23 This is what the Lord says:
“Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom,
or the powerful boast in their power,
or the rich boast in their riches.
24 But those who wish to boast
should boast in this alone:
that they truly know Me and understand that I am the Lord
who demonstrates unfailing love
and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth,
and that I delight in these things.
I, the Lord, have spoken!

The humble (afflicted) will hear and be glad. Our praise will console and encouraged those who are facing the issues of life and hope will take root in their hearts. Our blessing the Lord not only glorifies God and blesses us but is a blessing to others as well. It is a means of fulling Jesus’ instructions to go and make disciples (Mt. 28:19), to be instruments of righteousness (Romans 6:13), to be His ambassadors (Eph. 6:20), to be the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing (2 Cor 2:15), to be the light of the world (Mt.5:14); and to always be ready to explain this great hope we have in Christ (1 Peter 3:15).

So come on, Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together!
