“My grace is sufficient”

 John 1:16 (ESV)
“For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.”

 2 Cor 12.9

Our loving God even abounds in grace for the ‘stuff’ of life. You know, life “stuff” happens. Sometimes in seems like it is just a little bit more than we can handle. The great Apostle Paul understood this.

In 2 Cor. 12:7-10, Paul speaks about a thorn that he had in his side, his flesh. He says it was a messenger of satan to torment him, that this thing bothered him so much that he pleaded with God three times asking the Lord to remove it. But the Lord did not take Paul’s thorn away. The Lord said to Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness!”

God’s grace abounds in human weakness! Human weakness, the thorns of life comes in varied shapes and forms BUT GOD declares I have grace more than equal to it. My power is made perfect in the thorn. I will take that thorn and use it for my glory and your benefit. Remember – no failure in our God!

Many theologians and Bible scholars have spent much time and energy trying to come up with just what this thorn that bothered Paul was…some say malaria, others his eye sight, even others is height, and on and on. I believe it is right here that we can count another of the blessings from the fullness of God’s grace because we don’t know what Paul’s thorn was. The Bible doesn’t tell us.

I believe God wrote it this way on purpose because in His great wisdom and knowledge He knew that had He revealed to us what Paul’s thorn was, we would miss the complete blessing of this passage. We would say God’s grace is sufficient for that one thing. God’s grace is sufficient for malaria or God’s grace is sufficient for vision problems, etc.

But I believe God wants us to know that His grace is sufficient for our every need as we walk and live in Him. I don’t know what your thorn might be today… if it your health, your finances, your job, your marriage, your children… God says put it here in this verse and know my grace is sufficient, my power is made perfect in your weakness, from the fullness of my grace are many blessings with your name on it.

There is grace for every trial and tribulation this side of glory! Jesus says today, I pray that He will plant this truth in our hearts. I pray that we will open our hearts to receive it by faith and walk and live in the grace and knowledge of Christ, the Great I Am that I Am who is sufficient for our every need.

I am asking God to strengthen us to respond to the enemy’s lies of this is more than I take, of throwing in the towel, or giving up with this promise of God, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness!”

Psalm 84:11 declares, “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”
