Jeremiah 2:11-13 (NIV)
Has a nation ever changed its gods?
(Yet they are not gods at all.)
But my people have exchanged their glorious God
for worthless idols.
12 Be appalled at this, you heavens,
and shudder with great horror,”
declares the Lord.
13 “My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me,
the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
Another absolutely astonishing passage…God speaking to the heavens, telling them to be astonished, be appalled and shudder with great horror because Israel had forsaken Him. In fact, she had exchanged her Glorious God for worthless idols.
It would be astonishing to even think of a person or a nation committing such an atrocious act BUT just looking around in this self-centered, self-indulgent world and it lends to the understanding of these verses.
The Lord states that His people has committed two sins/evils:
- They have “forsaken me, the spring of living water.”
We remember the woman at the well when Jesus says, “but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life (John 4).”
The Lord calls the heavens as a witness that Israel has not allowed Him to fill their cup and be their refreshing and satisfying thirst quencher.
- Instead, they have dug their cisterns in the rocks to gather rain water. Cisterns that crack and that cannot hold water and have no possibility of quenching thirst. In fact, will only cause greater thirst. The nation of Israel created their own cisterns and rejected the One, True and Living God who is the source of life and chose them for Himself.
We live in a day and time when false idols abound. Perhaps it is reflective of why the Lord declares in 1 Peter 4:17a “For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household…”
He also admonishes us, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test (2 Corinthians 13:5)!”
Matthew 24:10-14, “At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”
Micah 6:8, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22-36-40
“14Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world 16as you hold forth the word of life.” Philippians 2:15
“All the utterances of my mouth are in righteousness; There is nothing crooked or perverted in them.” Proverbs 8:8
Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV)
8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Just saying, we never need to get carried away with our thoughts. We always need to seek God’s face for His…perhaps right now is a good time to bow before the Lord and pray.
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting (Psalm 139:23-24).”
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me (Psalm 51:10).”
“Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” And let it begin with me.
Let there be no idols in my life. Please fill any cracks with your Holy Spirit and your Word that I would be a display of Your glory.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
Psalm 33:12 (NIV)
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people He chose for His inheritance.
