29 As the crowd pressed in on Jesus, he said, “This evil generation keeps asking me to show them a miraculous sign. But the only sign I will give them is the sign of Jonah. 30 What happened to him was a sign to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him. What happens to the Son of Man will be a sign to these people that he was sent by God.
31 “The queen of Sheba will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen. 32 The people of Nineveh will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here—but you refuse to repent.
The leaders wanted proof, a sign…’Jesus, prove to us that you are the Messiah.’ Jesus reminds them of the “sign of Jonah.” Remember the words of Jonah’s prayer in Jonah 2, how the Lord had miraculously saved him from death. Jesus said, “What happened to him [Jonah] was a sign to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him. He goes further to say that what happens to me will be a sign to the world as well. This points forward to His death, burial, resurrection. I am giving you the sign “but you refuse to repent.”
Just as Jonah warned the Ninevites, Jesus is warning the religious leaders of His day… and us now. The Ninevites received the message and verse 32 says “for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah.” Jesus said to the leaders, but not you, you refuse to repent.” But not so today, many remain in rebellion and pride.
The remaining verses declare that someone greater that Solomon has come “but you refuse to listen.” The wisdom and knowledge of God “but you refuse to listen.”
The rebellion of man: refusal to repent and the refusal to listen to the wisdom of God which leads to salvation. So very sobering…
John 3:16-21 further declares this truth.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. 18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
