Glory and peace

luke-2-14b

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
    and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”  Luke 2:1-14

Peace with God gives the Peace of God!

 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near
by the blood of Christ.
For He himself is our peace…(Ephesians 2:13-14).”

I believe we have all experienced times when we found ourselves seeking peace, times when the “stuff of life” brings conflict, fear, anxiety, and  disappointment. One hymn writer called it “trials on every hand.” We find ourselves saying that we can make it through most anything if only the Lord would give us peace about it. We fail to remember that our peace has already been purchased and that the Prince of Peace lives in us. isaiah-9-6
“But He was pierced for our transgressions,
    He was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on Him,
    and by His wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).
Jesus speaks, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world (John 16:33).”
Walk by faith and not by sight. God’s favor rests upon those
who have the peace of God.

…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7).”

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).”

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
    my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
    he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, you people;
    pour out your hearts to him,
    for God is our refuge.” Psalm 62:5-8
