Who needs forgiveness?

The question is asked, “who was Jesus asking the Father to forgive?” Was it the two thieves who hung on each side of Him? Was it Pilate, Annas, members of the Sanhedrin, the Romans? Who? Certainly, not the ones who whipped Him or drove the nails through His flesh? Who needs forgiveness?

What does He mean, “for they do not know what they do.” Surely, they know that when you crucify a man you will take his life.” 1 Corinthians 2:8 helps us with our understanding. It says, None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. I believe Jesus is saying that they did not know the full extent of their wickedness. They were blind, ignorant of ALL that was happening and yet, their ignorance certainly did not mean that they were not responsible and accountable for their actions.

I am reminded of John 3:19, This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.”  Every man must make His choice, light or darkness.

We must be careful to not take for granted that Jesus was saying, everything is forgiven, now let’s get on with it. I believe He is asking the Father to allow those involved in His crucifixion to be given the same invitation to seek forgiveness in Jesus as every other person is given, “whoever will.” Jesus was praying to Father saying, when these people come repenting of their sin, believing in their heart and confessing with their mouth, forgive them.

For the Scripture says, “EVERYONE who believes in Him will not be put to shame.” Romans 10:11

“For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that WHOEVER believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Surely, the answer to the question of who is the “them” that needs forgiveness must be answered. The answer must include the reason Jesus was placed on the cross in the first place – to pay the payment for the sin of the world which includes my sin and your sin. Every man ever born is in need of forgiveness for sin and falling short of the glory of God. The only payment God will accept is the precious blood of His Son.

In Him [Jesus] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that He lavished on us. Ephesians 1:7-8a

Ephesians 1.7

Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb
Are you fully trusting in His grace this hour
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb

Are you washed in the blood,
In the soul cleansing blood of the Lamb
Are your garments spotless Are they white as snow
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb

To Know Jesus as Lord and Savior

  1. I am so glad He has forgiven me because I asked Him to! He will forgive anyone who asks and repents of their sin. This goes well with my post this morning. We are in sync, my friend!

  2. No one that comes to Christ will he cast out. John 6:37. What an assurance to know that no matter how far you’ve gone, Jesus is waiting with open arms to welcome you once you turn around and come to him. Therefore, as long as it’s called today, turn around, repent of your sins and be accepted in the beloved! Oh thank you Lord Jesus for your saving grace.
