Back to Peter…but because You say so

Luke 5.8

He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. Luke 5:3-11

Can you imagine, so many fish that they could fill two boats to the point of their sinking? When Peter saw it, he came to understand that this was no ordinary day and Jesus was no ordinary man…and this was no ordinary fishing trip. Peter and the other fishermen were astonished at this miracle. In fact, Peter immediately knew that he was in the presence of the  Holy, True and Living God, I AM THAT I AM and was witnessing a display of His power and glory!

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” At this moment, Peter realized his sinfulness and felt shame for his own sin and being in Jesus’ presence.

We see this with Isaiah as well:

In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”

And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

The question is how will you and respond as walk in His presence today and behold His beauty?

  1. Thank you for sharing your walk of faith! I think there are times when God fills our nets, but we take credit for it personally! This scripture is a great reminder to meditate and pray about all that happens to us!
