But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers
will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those
who will worship Him that way. For God is Spirit,
so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23-24 (NLT)
I pray you will be blessed by this post from 2 years ago…Blessed is the Name of Jesus!
“In spirit” means that true worship begins and is empowered by the Holy Spirit who lives in us. True worship is rooted in the inner being, the heart of man. This why it is important to guard our hearts from any influence that will hinder true worship. True worship is not only happens on Sunday but is an ‘all of life experience’ for those who have been born again by the Spirit of God. Since Jesus is always present, worship should be how we live life. True worship will show up on the outside but it is always rooted in the heart.
“In truth” means that true worship is a response to the living and true Word of God. True worship embraces the sound doctrine and teaching that God has given us in the Scriptures, the Holy Bible. True worship is to love and treasure God and His Holy Word and perspective above all else. Anything less is not true worship of the Creator and Ruler, Sovereign Most High God. It is instead, worship of the created rather than the Creator.
God is seeking for those who will worship Him “in Spirit and in Truth.” Since the God who created heaven and earth…and us is seeking such, worship should be important to us. Worship is a priority for in the life of the believer.
William Temple, the Archbishop of Cantebury from 1942-44 put it like this, “To worship is to quicken the conscience by the holiness of God, to feed the mind with the truth of God, to purge the imagination by the beauty of God, to open the heart to the love of God, to devote the will to the purpose of God.”
I am one who will often make bullet points to aid my understanding and application of The Word. Today it goes like this:
God is seeking one who worships:
– in Spirit
– in Truth
Application: Lord, you know my heart, am I a true worshiper? Search me and know my heart. Test me and know my thoughts. Please reveal any part that is empty or false.
Application: William Temple’s description of worship is one worth pondering. To worship is:
– to quicken the conscience by the holiness of God
– to feed the mind with the truth of God
– to purge the imagination by the beauty of God
– to open the heart to the love of God
– to devote the will to the purpose of God
In what ways does my worship include the holiness, truth, beauty, love and the purposes of God?
Our Heavenly Father,
We bless your holy, righteous and perfect Name. It is our heart to worship You in Spirit and in Truth. Speak to our hearts as we meditate on Your Word and this quote that we would be found in Your presence, gazing upon Your beauty and seeking You in worship in the all of life.
In Jesus Name,
