A merciful and faithful High Priest

Hebrews 2.17

For this reason He had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that He might make atonement for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17

I am so thankful for Jesus Christ for my salvation is in Christ alone!

Today’s we read, Hebrews 2:17 which begins with “For this reason.” We look back to verse 14b-15 to find that the writer continues to reveal the life and word of Jesus by telling us the reason Jesus took on the likeness of man, thatHe might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

How does He break the power of the devil?
Verse 17, by becoming a
“merciful and faithful high priest in service to God,”
by atoning for man’s sin, “that He might make atonement for the sins of the people.”

In other words, Jesus came that He would make an offering before God as High Priest and be the offering to God as the Sacrificial Lamb and atone for our sin. That’s a ‘shout now – HALLELUJAH!’

In the Old Testament, the role of the high priest was to make sin offerings before the Lord so the sins of the people could be forgiven. Jesus fulfilled this need in the New Testament for all time.

He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. Hebrews 9:12

God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of His blood—to be received by faith. Romans 3:25a

Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But He has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Hebrews 9:26

Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for His own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when He offered himself. Hebrews 7:27

so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him. Hebrews 9:28

Jesus came as the Messiah to make atonement for man by taking on man’s guilt and sin. What a merciful Savior who abounds in grace to endure the wrath of God for our sin, not His own.

God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21

When God’s wrath fell on Christ, He took the punishment and death that belonged to you me “for the wage of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Jesus justified us in God’s court of righteousness.

Jesus the Christ, the merciful and faithful high priest.

Merciful in dealing with man – Son of Man
Faithful in dealing with sin “in service to God” – Son of God

O Heavenly Father, we bow in thanks and praise to exalt your Holy Name! Thank you for so loving us that You gave Your Son that we would know forgiveness and redemption of sins and no longer fear death but rather, have eternal and abundant life. Thank you for the atoning work of Jesus our Savior and Lord! We bow and agree that You and You Alone are God! We are blessed and privileged to be Your blood bought children.
In Jesus Name, Amen!
