16 Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding. 17 God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. 18 So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. 19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. 20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.Hebrews 6:19-20 NLT
God confirmed the promise He gave Abraham with an oath. If you or I were to go to court to give testimony, we would be asked to take an oath and would be asked to swear by saying “so help me God.” We would be taking an oath in the One who is greater than we are and that oath would be considered legally binding. There is no one greater than God so He bound Himself with an oath. How great is our God!
Verse 17 is such a blessing for it says that “so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that He would never change His mind.” Did you catch it? It does not say so Abraham, alone, could be sure. No, it says “those”…remember Abraham heirs would be be like sand on the seashore, stars in the sky, like the dust – the heirs of the promise, “and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you Genesis 12:3b).” Let’s not forget that Galatians 3:29 declares, “And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.”
We’re included! God gave a promise and an oath. “These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie.” The promise shall be fulfilled.
“Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. 19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. 20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.”
Since God gave a promise and an oath, and cannot lie, we who have run to Jesus Christ for refuge can be confident that He is our hope that never disappoints. “And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us (Romans 5:5). Not only does this hope not disappoint but it is a strong and trustworthy anchor of our souls.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time (1 Peter 1:3-5).”
“I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:12).”
Jesus, our High Priest who is Superior!
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
15 To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified.
