Hope for today: remember others in prayer

I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints, and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ. For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you. Philemon 1:4-7

Hope for today: He has shown you

HopeHe has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8

Hope for today: sow and reap

HopeBut this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8

Hope for today: serving others

HopeBut among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Helping by prayer…

2 Corin 1.10-11

10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us again. On Him we have set our hope that He will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.” 2 Corinthians 1:10-11

So yes, the suffering is real but Paul knows who is his very present Deliverer. The One who is able to save and protect. He had a great understanding of Matthew 10:28, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

In fact, the following is what he had to say when in a Roman prison writing to the Philippians. He was willing to suffer for the cause of Christ.

12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.

15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

What I believe God would have us see in both the Corinthians and Philippians Scriptures on today is the the role of prayer in deliverance. We often say, ‘if only I could do something or I don’t know how to help.” These verses tell us the effectiveness of prayer and James 5:16 declares that “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Paul is giving testimony to this truth!

The wonderful thing is that we do not have to know name or need. There are some things that are needed because we are on the battlefield for the Lord: wisdom, anointing, discernment, protection, sound doctrine, open doors, language barriers, strength, courage…and of course, we pray specific needs when we know them. The principle here is straight from Scripture, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people (Ephesians 6:18).”

We don’t even have to leave our homes to be found faithful! 🙂 Come on, let’s get on with it, let’s strengthen our brothers and sisters through fervent and effectual prayer!

Experiencing God

John 5.19

Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. John 5:19-20

One of the spiritual markers in my relationship with the Lord is “Experiencing God” Bible study by Henry and Richard Blackaby. The study was such a blessing as we learned and experienced the Seven Realities for Experiencing God. God taught me principles for Kingdom living that all these years later still just rise up in my heart and mind. Here are a couple in regards to God always being at work.

  • Watch to see where God is working and join Him in His work.
  • You cannot stay where you are and go with God. You cannot continue doing things your way and accomplish God’s purpose in His ways. Your thinking cannot come close to God’s thoughts. For you to do the will of God, you must adjust your life to Him, His purposes, and His ways
  • Will God ever ask you to do something you are not able to do? The answer is yes–all the time! It must be that way, for God’s glory and kingdom. If we function according to our ability alone, we get the glory; if we function according to the power of the Spirit within us, God gets the glory. He wants to reveal Himself to a watching world.
  • If you feel weak, limited, ordinary, you are the best material through which God can work.
  • The reality is that the Lord never calls the qualified; He qualifies the called.
  • We don’t choose what we will do for God; He invites us to join Him where He wants to involve us.
  • We were not saved from our sin simply so that we would qualify for heaven. God delivered us so we would have a relationship with Him through which He could carry out His mission to redeem a lost world.

The God of detail

These are the offerings you are to receive from them: gold, silver and bronze; blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen; goat hair; ram skins dyed red and another type of durable leather; acacia wood; olive oil for the light; spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense; and onyx stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod and breastpiece.
“Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them. Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.
Exodus 25:3-9

Over the next few days, we will look at the tabernacle and all its furnishings and I pray that we will take note of the detailed instructions God gave to Moses. Just as we see the Lord be specific in the offerings the people were to bring.

In verses 8-9, the Lord states that the Israelites are to make Him a sanctuary and He would dwell among them. He then says,Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings EXACTLY like the pattern I will show you.”

As we read through the next couple of days, we will see that the Lord was very specific about the patterns. This portion of Scripture has always been a great blessing to me in regards to life and service unto the Lord.

  1. Don’t worship serve the Living and True, I Am Who I Am in a haphazard way. He is an Excellent God who is worthy of excellent worship and service. God does care about the details. Draw close and get the details from Him. He still speaks to His children. Trust Him to provide the details, the people/materials needed for His details, and the power to perform the details. “‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6
  2. Just as the Lord saw the details of the Israelites’ lives, He sees every detail of my life. Just like He moved in their regard, He will move in mine.
The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt.
I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land…” Exodus 3:7-8

Surely, I do not know all the details of my life, His plans and purposes BUT He does and I can trust Him to complete everything He has begun in me (“for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose Philippians 2:13).”

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, 21 equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20-21

Every day, every thing

Colossians 3.17

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed,
do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Colossians 3:17

I was looking for an image and God was so good (as He always is) to bring me to this one. It really says much in so few words so I will let it speak for itself. Selah!

Oh, before I go…how you doing with this verse? 🙂

Teach them God’s statutes and laws

15 Moses replied to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God. 16 Whenever they have a dispute, it comes to me, and I make a decision between one man and another. I teach them God’s statutes and laws.17 “What you’re doing is not good,” Moses’ father-in-law said to him. 18 “You will certainly wear out both yourself and these people who are with you, because the task is too heavy for you. You can’t do it alone. 19 Now listen to me; I will give you some advice, and God be with you. You be the one to represent the people before God and bring their cases to Him. 20 Instruct them about the statutes and laws, and teach them the way to live and what they must do. 21 But you should select from all the people able men, God-fearing, trustworthy, and hating bribes. Place them over the people as commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. 22 They should judge the people at all times. Then they can bring you every important case but judge every minor case themselves. In this way you will lighten your load, and they will bear it with you. 23 If you do this, and God so directs you, you will be able to endure, and also all these people will be able to go home satisfied.”  24 Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. Exodus 18:15..23

So…you are called to be a leader of God’s people. God uses Jethro to give us some key points of leadership. I won’t take much time but I pray that you will take some ‘selah’ time and examine yourself before the Lord.

  1. Teach the “God’s statutes and laws,” not your opinions. Just lovingly and gently put your finger on the Word…and teach, what God has to say is far more important than your opinions. It is His Word that brings life, not ours UNLESS our words are His Word. 🙂
  2. Represent the people before God and bring their cases to Him. This is called prayer, pray for those you lead. I believe this is more that one big swoop, bless them, Lord prayer. We are to bring their specific cases before the Lord.
  3. “Teach  them the way to live and what they must do.” Please note that in verse 2o, instructing the people about the statues and laws is followed by the word “and.”
It is one thing to know a Bible verse and another to know how to practically apply that verse to one’s life. Leaders are called to teach both, with words and action.
  4. Leaders should be people who are “able, God-fearing, trustworthy, and hating bribes.”
  5. Verse 23 – don’t leave God out and go it alone. First, discern that God is in fact leading you and then keep Him as your Leader. It is easy to begin with God and then plow ahead and leave Him behind. When we allow God to lead us, we find that He provides everything we need to carry our our assignments to His glory, lead the people for His glory, and endure while witnessing His glory along the journey. Both the leader and people will find their satisfaction in the Lord. There is no sweeter place to be!
  6. Be able to listen and accept counsel and do all God leads you to do as He sends and uses others give you His wisdom. There is not even a glimmer of Moses being offended or declaring his own importance or knowledge. He listened, received, and moved on a due word in due season to establish the system that God was putting in place.

Selah, pause and ponder and pray!
