A firm warning

Hebrews 10.31

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Hebrews 10:26-31

I know, I know, I know! In the world’s eyes and even some believers, I am suppose to skip over the verses above. Surely, a God of love would not say such things. There is only one problem, He did. And just as He is not a man that He should lie in regards to my finances, my marriage, my health, my need; He is not a man that He should lie about the due wage for sin. The wage of sin is death, separation from God and hell.

I know, I know, I know! You get to make your own choice! You do, you do, you do! But know, God is not a man that He should lie. It is a dreadful thing for a man who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, who has insulted the Spirit of Grace, to fall into the hands of the living God.

We are privileged to make our choice, but not to determine the consequences of our choice. God has already told us the consequence. I plead with you, choose wisely!

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

Forgiven

hebrews-10-17-e1509753126417.jpg

16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”

17 Then He adds:
“Their sins and lawless acts
I will remember no more.”
18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

Your will, O God

Hebrews 10.7

Consequently, when Christ came into the world, He said,
“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
but a body have you prepared for me;
in burnt offerings and sin offerings You have taken no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God,
as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’” Hebrews 10:5-7

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me!

I have come to do Your will, O God.”

Your will, O God!
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10

Your will, O God!

“even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28

Your will, O God!
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

Your will, O God!
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19

Your will, O God!
“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” Luke 4:18-19

Your will, O God!
Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush Him; He has put Him to grief; when His soul makes an offering for guilt, He shall see His offspring; He shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. Isaiah 53:10

Your will, O God!
But He was pierced for our transgressions;

    He was crushed for our iniquities;
upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with His wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:10

Guarantor of a better covenant

Hebrews 7.22

22 This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.

23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. 28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.

Only God can guarantee a better covenant after He sets aside the old covenant. Jesus is able to fulfill the office of High Priest forever because He lives forever. Every priest before Jesus died but our Savior lives forever.

Just look at how the Lord describes Jesus, the Superior High Priest in verse 26: holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens…and because of Who He is, He has no need to repeatedly make an offering for his sin and then the sins of others for Jesus was sinless, separated from sinners. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).”

For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:3-4

The Lord appointed Jesus and took an oath that His appointment is forever. The fact that God took an oath proves the importance of this permanent and unchanging covenant. It has been settled in heaven forever.

When I think about the lack of integrity, relativism, and subjectivity of today, I am comforted to know that Abba, Father is faithful to His Word. We need not have one concern that our High Priest will die or change His mind. God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?“Numbers 23:19

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:13-14

Hope for today: the Shepherd and Overseer

Hope23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 25 For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

A High Priesthood

Hebrews 5

We are moving forward in the Book of Hebrews and I pray you will join me in reading Hebrews 5. I am asking the LORD to open His Word to our hearts  and our hearts to His Word. Thank you for joining me!

Qualifications for High Priesthood

For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.

A Priest Forever

So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:

“You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.”

As He also says in another place:

“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek”;

who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,” 11 of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.

Spiritual Immaturity

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Hope for today: run with perseverance

HopeTherefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3

Consider Jesus

Hebrews3.1

Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. Hebrews 3:1-2

So here we are again, looking at that word “therefore” that tells us to go back and see what the “therefore” is there for. The writer of Hebrews has just used two chapters telling his readers that Jesus is the Superior One, that Jesus is the Supreme One, and the One Sufficient for their/our need including our greatest enemies of satan, sin, and death.

The writer encourages his readers to “consider” Jesus. Give thought, gaze intently, look closely, examine what I have shared with you and come to the right conclusion. In order for us to understand what the writer was saying, we have to understand to whom he was speaking. Just like the writer of the Book of Hebrews is not known because the Lord did not include it in this Book (although most of us have our thoughts), He did not give any specifics as to the exact location of this group of people but it is generally agreed that the book is written primarily to Jews who fall into 3 groups.

  • Jewish believers – true Christians who have left Judaism and received Christ as Lord and Savior
  • Jews who have intellectual agreement but have never committed their lives to Christ, never acted on what they know
  • Jews who have heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ but made absolutely no response at all

When you look at these three groups, we can very quickly remove “Jewish/Jews” and but the word “People” and understand that today’s churches are filled with this same audience. Those who believe, those who have intellectual agreement without a heart change, and those who come, hear, and make no response.

Surely, this realization also causes us to pray for an intellectual only response and non-response to the Gospel is a response, it is called rejection. May they answer the Lord’s call before it is everlasting too late.

As we look at verse 1, I am just so blessed and thankful for how the Lord (He is the true writer) describes his audience, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling.” These are the people in the first group above, true believers who have repented, confessed their sins, and accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior…prayerfully you and me. What joy to know that the Lord sees us as “holy,” as those who share in a “heavenly calling!” Aw come on now, that is a shout now – “Hallelujah!”

Not holy by our own works but holy by our position in Christ. Again, holy not because of our practice but because of the work Jesus did at the cross and… holy because of our position in Christ and now able to live holy to the glory of God.

And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:10

  • For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. Hebrews 10:14
  • Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” Hebrews 10:17
  • As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:14-16

What a delight to my soul! My sins and lawless acts remembered no more for God has said, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). He has made those with the heavenly calling to be holy! Shout now – Hallelujah!

  • Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. Ephesians 1:3-4
  •  I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14

O Father, how I thank You for the grace of holiness made possible in Christ! Never, never, never would this be possible aside from Your love, grace, and mercy but in Christ all things are possible! Blessed is Your Holy Name!
In Jesus Name, we pray! Amen!
